Use of ammonia detectors in a project to recover heat from superheated ammonia for central heating and DHW - a case study
Ammonia (NH3) is widely used in the production processes of many food companies, mainly as a refrigerant. During these processes, ammonia is superheated, which generates a significant amount of waste heat. Instead of allowing this heat to be wasted, it can be used efficiently, contributing to significant energy and cost savings.

Innovative project to recover heat from ammonia

A project to recover heat from superheated ammonia for central heating (CH) and domestic hot water (DHW) was implemented at a company in the food industry. This project was successfully implemented together with the engineering and construction company Projandspaw. This is a company with extensive experience in the implementation of industrial systems, covering a diverse range of industries, from pharmaceuticals and heating to refineries and the oil and gas industry.

Use of ammonia detectors

A key safety feature of the project was the use of JUMO ammonia detectors to detect leaks in the circuit. The Jumo ammonia sensor consists of a glass pH electrode and a reference electrode, housed in an electrolyte separated from the medium by a membrane. The operating temperatures of the sensor range from 0 to 50°C, and with a low-temperature electrolyte from -8 to +30°C.

Benefits of heat recovery

The ammonia heat recovery project has brought a number of benefits to the food company:

  • Significant heating cost savings: Recovered heat covers a significant proportion of the building's heating needs, reducing energy bills.
  • Reduction in CO2 emissions: By using waste heat, we reduce our use of fossil fuels, which in turn leads to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Improved energy efficiency: The heat recovery system increases the energy efficiency of the factory, meaning less energy is wasted.
  • Increased safety: Heat recovery from ammonia eliminates the need to burn additional fossil fuels, which reduces the risk of fires and explosions.

Safe heat recovery with NH3 ammonia detector - summary

The project to recover heat from superheated ammonia for central heating and hot water is an example of an innovative approach to energy management in the food industry. Thanks to the use of state-of-the-art technologies, such as Jumo ammonia meters and the JUMO AQUIS 500 pH controller, it was possible to achieve significant energy savings, improve efficiency and safety, and reduce CO2 emissions. The collaboration with Projandspaw proved crucial to the success of the project, opening up new perspectives for future, equally innovative initiatives.
