Precise determination of the weight of these tanks allows for efficient order management. The task is not simple, however - even small deviations can affect compliance with delivery documentation and the accuracy of invoice settlements. An ink manufacturing company was looking for a solution that would ensure accuracy in measuring the weight of inks, and thus customer satisfaction. We developed an advanced application to accurately determine the weight of mineral oils in storage tanks. Why does accurate weight determination require a comprehensive solution?

Measurement accuracy is crucial for both production processes and compliance with customs requirements. Precise weight determination in storage tanks is a complex task that requires consideration of many variables. Accurate liquid level measurement is crucial, but that's not all - it's also necessary to take into account factors such as material density, temperature, and tank specifics, including shape and volume. Traditional methods, such as ultrasonic level sensors, may not be sufficient when accuracy requirements are very high, such as in the context of customs clearance or procurement processes. This is why a comprehensive solution that integrates advanced measurement technologies, automation systems and data analysis software is necessary.

Why doesn't the ultrasonic method work well for measuring paint?

The ultrasonic method works well in many industrial applications. However, in the case of measuring paints for a company that produces printing materials, it has proven to be insufficiently precise. Accuracy limitations can lead to discrepancies in weight calculations, especially for liquids with varying densities, such as mineral and vegetable oils used in ink production.

The tanks are as high as 7 meters, creating challenges for ultrasonic waves. The long distance caused a decrease in signal quality, leading to erroneous measurement results. In addition, the ultrasonic method is also susceptible to interference from varying tank conditions, such as:

  • Temperature: Temperature fluctuations can affect the propagation speed of ultrasonic waves, causing measurement errors.
  • Environmental conditions: Liquid vapors or deposits inside tanks could interfere with ultrasonic waves, affecting their reflection.

How does modern technology support tank paint measurement? Our solution

Our engineering team proposed a comprehensive solution based on the JUMO mTRON T automation system . A key element was the use of JUMO MAERA level probes , which enable continuous liquid level measurement and simultaneous temperature monitoring. This, combined with the functionality of a PLC based on CODESYS V3 software, makes it possible to accurately determine the weight of mineral and vegetable oils in storage tanks.

The JUMO mTRON T system integrates mathematical and logic modules that calculate the mass of the liquid based on the pressure difference between the probes, taking into account the variable density of the liquid and the dimensions of the tank. Process data is visualized on the intuitive screens of a multifunctional panel, enabling on-site monitoring and control. The solution has also been integrated with the company's host system, so process values can be sent to the purchasing department, streamlining material management processes.
