Temperature measurement
How to control the temperature in air purifiers?
Air purifiers with <b>HEPA H14 filters</b> are increasingly used in public facilities such as schools, hospitals, and offices. To increase filtration efficiency and reduce the risk of infection, including airborne viruses and bacteria, such as SARS-CoV-2, many devices use thermal filter regeneration. This process allows for complete deactivation of microorganisms by heating the filter cartridge to a temperature of approximately 100°C. However, this carries the risk of overheating, which can lead to material deformation, component damage, or even shutdown of the entire device. In this case study, we show how the use of the JUMO heatTHERM thermostat as a safety temperature limiter allows you to effectively control the filter heating process and protect the system from failure. You will learn how this solution supports the reliability of air purifiers, enables their safe operation, and facilitates indoor air quality control.

How to ensure thermal safety in air disinfection devices? Customer challenge

Air purification devices increasingly use special filters that trap viruses and bacteria, including those responsible for COVID-19. To restore their full effectiveness, manufacturers are implementing a function known as thermal regeneration. This means that the filter is heated to around 100°C, which neutralizes the microorganisms accumulated in it.

This process is effective but requires caution. Excessively high temperatures can damage the filter, deform the seals, or overheat the entire device. In extreme cases, this can lead to system shutdown and the need for service intervention.

The customer was looking for a simple and reliable way to ensure safety when heating the filter. He wanted a solution that:

  • will cut off the power supply if the temperature exceeds a safe level,

  • will operate independently of the rest of the electronics,

  • works well in devices operating in various conditions – e.g., in schools, offices, or clinics.

How does a safety temperature limiter protect the HEPA filter in an air purifier? Our solution

To effectively protect the HEPA H14 filter from overheating during the disinfection process, a safety temperature limiter – has been installed in the device – an independent component that automatically switches off the air purifier when a certain temperature threshold is reached. In this particular case, the limit has been set at 140°C, because above 175°C there is a real risk of deformation of the filter cartridge, damage to the sealing materials, and, as a consequence, failure of the entire air purification system.

The JUMO heatTHERM panel thermostat acts as a temperature sensor, but also as an active protective element. Its response is immediate and completely independent of other electronic systems in the device. This ensures reliable protection of the HEPA filter, even in emergency situations or when other components are malfunctioning. The limiter acts as a last line of defense, preventing overheating, damage, and potential hazards to the user.

This type of solution works well wherever air purification is carried out using thermal regeneration. Heating the filter cartridge to a temperature of approximately 100°C effectively neutralizes bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms. However, without an adequate temperature control and thermal protection system, this process can be risky for the durability and performance of the device.

The use of JUMO temperature limiters is particularly important in:

  • mobile and stationary air purifiers with thermal disinfection function,

  • integrated HVAC systems for public buildings such as schools, offices, and clinics,

  • rooms where high air quality and continuous operation of equipment are important.

Thanks to a reliable sensor, the temperature inside the filter is constantly monitored and the system can react automatically without the need for user intervention. In combination with other system components, such as humidity sensors or measuring modules, it is possible to create an advanced environment for air temperature control.

Why is a temperature limiter in the filter a good solution for air purifier operation? Customer benefits

The use of an independent temperature limiter in an air purifier translates into a number of measurable benefits, both technical and operational. This solution not only protects the HEPA filter and extends its service life, but also supports the overall performance of the indoor air purification system.

Stable air quality even with intensive use

Thanks to advanced temperature control in the H14 filter, the air purifier can operate in regeneration mode without risk of damage. This means that the process of effectively removing air pollutants such as viruses, bacteria, and allergens is maintained at a consistently high level, even in high-traffic areas, ensuring safety for the respiratory system.

Reliable and secure technology

The safety temperature limiter operates independently of the main electronics. This allows it to function as an emergency sensor that protects the HEPA filter and housing components from overheating. This layer of protection is an important advantage in devices designed for continuous operation, e.g., in hospitals, schools, or offices.

Lower risk of downtime and system failures

Our temperature sensor is equipped with an automatic power cut-off function when the temperature limit is exceeded, reducing the need for servicing and minimizing downtime. The user does not need to monitor the measurement on an ongoing basis – the sensor in the air purifier works in the background, ensuring continuous safety.

Optimization of operating costs

HEPA filters are expensive, so protecting them from overheating translates into real savings. In addition, the absence of mechanical damage reduces wear and tear on the air purifier's components, allowing the system to maintain high performance for longer.

Greater credibility for the manufacturer and comfort for the end user

The device, equipped with temperature sensors and a safety control system, builds user confidence and meets the expectations of customers who care about air quality. For the manufacturer, this is a selling point, and for the customer, it is real value in the form of greater safety and comfort.

Want to improve air quality and increase the safety of your purifier?
Use the reliable JUMOheatTHERM temperature sensor and protect the filter from overheating – simply, effectively, and with the longest possible service life in mind.
