CASE STUDY
Temperature control in wood tunnel dryers: using SIL systems for optimum safety. Case study
Incorrect temperature control in industrial drying tunnels can lead to serious problems. Product quality deteriorates and the risk of fire increases. Our team's work with a leading wood processing plant demonstrated these key challenges. Even small deviations from the optimum temperature ranges were causing significant material loss and posing safety risks. Our team developed a comprehensive solution for the plant. We combined SIL-certified measuring chains with specialised temperature sensors and advanced pressure monitoring systems. This case study illustrates how proper temperature and pressure monitoring in wood processing prevents fires and ensures stable product quality. We discuss the customer's challenges, our technical approach and the measurable benefits of better safety systems in drying tunnels. Read on!

Why is temperature control crucial in modern tunnel dryers?

Precise temperature control is fundamental to the safe and efficient operation of drying tunnels in modern wood processing plants. Our experience shows that optimum temperature conditions are important for three main reasons:

  • They ensure even drying without defects such as warping or cracking.
  • They maintain a consistent reduction in the moisture content of the materials.
  • They optimise energy consumption in the drying process.

Temperature also plays a key role in operational safety. Wood dust and volatile chemicals make precise temperature control essential to effectively prevent fire hazards. The drying tunnel operates in potentially explosive areas, making temperature control even more important.

Our industrial experience also shows that adequate air and steam pressure helps to dry materials efficiently. System failure often results from pressure levels deviating from optimum ranges, which can damage equipment and disrupt processes.

How to prevent uneven drying of wood and overheating in tunnel dryers? Customer challenge

A leading timber manufacturer approached us with serious issues relating to the operation of their drying tunnels. They needed help to resolve several key issues. The biggest issue was the risk of uneven drying and overheating of the wood during the process.

Key challenges included:

  • Inconsistent moisture reduction of materials.
  • Risk of overheating in areas of high wood dust concentration.
  • Difficulties in maintaining optimum pressure levels.
  • The need for precise temperature measurement and control in hazardous areas.
  • Requirements to comply with safety standards.

The situation was further complicated by volatile compounds and wood dust, which created potentially explosive atmospheres in the drying tunnels. It was necessary to develop a measurement solution that would prevent uneven drying and eliminate fire hazards.

How do safety systems (SIL), temperature sensors (ATEX) and pressure transmitters eliminate the risk of fire in dryers? Our solution

We implemented a detailed safety solution, combining advanced monitoring systems to meet the client's stringent requirements. A key element of our proposal was the use of SIL-certified measurement chains and ATEX temperature sensors combined with precision pressure transmitters.

Our integrated safety systems include:

  • JUMO safetyM STB/STW Ex temperature limiter with JUMO PROCESStemp resistive temperature sensors.
  • Resistive temperature probes with ATEX certification.
  • JUMO dTRANS p20 DELTA differential pressure transmitters for zone 0 environments.

This solution creates multi-level protection against the risk of fire. The temperature limiters continuously monitor critical temperature thresholds, automatically preventing dangerous levels from being reached in hazardous areas. Certified resistive sensors provide reliable temperature data, even under demanding industrial conditions in hazardous areas.

Differential pressure transmitters add an important safety dimension. These devices measure and monitor gas, vapour and liquid pressures throughout the drying process. Our solution eliminates the risk of fire and ensures optimal drying conditions by precisely controlling and regulating temperature and pressure parameters.
