YOUR QUESTIONS
Wireless temperature sensor – answers to frequently asked questions
Traditional temperature sensors, although reliable, often require complex installation, wiring and a permanent connection to a central monitoring system. In hard-to-reach areas and in explosive atmospheres, routing cables can be not only inconvenient but also dangerous. In addition, in dynamically changing industrial environments, a permanent connection can be subject to mechanical damage, corrosion or other factors that can interfere with the proper functioning of the system. To meet these needs, we have enriched our range with wireless temperature sensors such as the JUMO Wtrans T with wireless radio transmission. In this article, we answer your most frequently asked questions about this device. Read on and see if this temperature measurement solution is for your company!

What is the wireless data transmission range for the temperature sensor?

The wireless data transmission range for a temperature sensor is as follows:

In open space, using an antenna bracket for wall mounting the receiver and a 3-meter antenna cable, the range of the wireless temperature sensor wTRANS is:

  • 300 meters for the frequency of 868.4 MHz (intended for the European market)
  • 100 meters for the frequency of 915 MHz (intended for the American, Australian, Canadian, and New Zealand markets)

When the antenna is mounted directly to the receiver, a reduction in range of about 40% should be considered.

What is the measuring range of the wireless temperature sensor?

The wireless temperature sensor Wtrans T is capable of recording temperatures in the following ranges:

  • Operational range: from -30 to +260 °C or from -200 to +600 °C in the high-temperature version.
  • Ambient temperature of the enclosure: either from -30 to +85 °C or from -25 to +125 °C.

For which applications will a temperature sensor with radio transmission be suitable?

The wireless temperature sensor Wtrans T meets the specific needs of many industrial sectors. In the case of mixers and machines with rotating parts, the main advantage of Wtrans T is the absence of cables, which eliminates the risk of cable damage during the operation of the device. For tanks used in transport, which are often moved, the lack of wires makes Wtrans T extremely convenient to use.

In the meat industry, Wtrans T is invaluable. It can be easily inserted into various types of meats and sausages, allowing for quick and accurate temperature measurements, which are crucial for the quality and safety of products. In the plastics industry, the sensor is inserted, for example, into bags of granules. It monitors the temperature, helping to prevent self-ignition, which is critical for safe storage.

Similarly, in agriculture, Wtrans T is used to monitor the temperature of fertilizers. Its mobility is key, as fertilizer is regularly turned over. The wireless sensor not only protects against self-ignition but also provides flexibility in monitoring different batches of fertilizer. Our clients also use the Wtrans T sensor in hard-to-reach places in warehouses and in explosion-prone areas. There are many more potential applications – this device is suitable for all applications where mobility and the absence of cabling are crucial.

What is the battery life for wireless temperature sensors?

The battery life of the wireless sensor Wtrans T depends on various factors, such as the transmission interval and ambient temperature. Here are some technical details:

  • The battery life varies depending on the transmission interval (1 s, 10 s, 30 s, or 90 s) and ambient temperature for Wtrans T01, and depending on the transmission interval (2 s, 15 s, 45 s, or 150 s) and ambient temperature for Wtrans T02, as shown in the charts below.
  • Under standard conditions, with default settings and at room temperature, the battery life is approximately 1 year. However, it's important to note that a short transmission interval and extremely high or low ambient temperatures can shorten the life of the lithium battery.

What are the capabilities of receivers for wireless sensors?

The WTrans T temperature sensor can be connected to the universal receiver for wireless sensors, JUMO Wtrans T01. This receiver can handle up to 16 Wtrans T transmitters simultaneously. It features a built-in small LCD screen for temperature readings. There's also the option to connect this sensor to a recorder via a Modbus interface. The option offering the most capabilities is integration with the PLC controller variTRON 300, expanded with the IOT platform for cloud-based JUMO SCADA Cloud process management. This allows access to the temperature data collected by the sensor from any location using popular web browsers and receiving SMS alarm messages when the temperature value is exceeded.

How many wireless sensors can be connected to a single PLC controller?

Up to 32 WTrans T temperature sensors can be connected to a single variTRON 300 PLC controller.
