Task

An international company operating in the field of maritime wastewater treatment was looking for a reliable solution for monitoring and controlling its bilge water monitoring system. This solution is positioned between the oil‑water separator and the overboard valve. It is designed to prevent non‑compliant discharges into the ocean as well as to ensure compliance with the legal requirements according to MEPC 107(49).

All relevant process data – including oil content, valve status, flow rates, and GPS information – should be continuously acquired, documented, and fully traceable. In addition, seamless integration into the ship's existing GPS system is required.

Solution approach

The required monitoring and control system is implemented by the JUMO LOGOSCREEN 700, which is a highly scalable and intuitive paperless recorder. It controls the disposal of the treated bilge water fully automatically by opening the three-way valve for disposal overboard when the oil content is below 15 ppm. In addition to its control functions, the device also handles the complete recording of process-relevant GPS data, events, and alarms as well as recording the oil content and the amount of purified bilge water discharged in m³ and liters. In addition to the display on the device, process data can be visualized via a web server, which can be customized to the customer's requirements.

Furthermore, GPS data from GPS receivers using the NMEA‑0183 data format can be received via a serial interface and automatically stored in the event log at freely selectable intervals (from 60 seconds to 60 minutes). In addition to the position, up to 2 additional GPS data sets such as time, speed, or course of the ship can be logged. The stored data can be transferred to higher-level controls via Modbus or PROFINET. The optional PC communication software (PCC) and PC evaluation software (PCA3000) enable fully automatic archiving and export to common formats such as PDF or Excel – including a print function for complete documentation.

Project outcome

The JUMO LOGOSCREEN 700 combines control, data recording, and evaluation in a compact system. Several separate components are replaced, hardware costs are reduced, and the internal system architecture is simplified. For both the customer and the shipping companies as end customers, this means fewer interfaces, greater operational safety, and centralized as well as tamper-proof documentation of all relevant unloading data.

In addition, the system can be flexibly expanded. Using a JUMO variTRON 300 as a gateway, both process data and dynamic GPS coordinates to be transferred reliably and easily to the JUMO Cloud. As an IoT platform for process visualization and data acquisition/evaluation/archiving, it enables worldwide access to all relevant measurement data via a web browser. This allows ship owners and shipping companies to maintain an overview at all times – whether of a single ship or an entire fleet.
