What is an I/O module?
An I/O module, also known as an input/output module or peripheral module, is the interface between a controller and the connected sensors as well as actuators. It converts signals from measuring devices, switches, or keys into signals that the processor can process. At the same time, it transmits control commands to the connected actuators. Without I/O modules, machines and plants would not be able to process information or be controlled in a targeted manner.
What types of I/O modules are available?

I/O modules can generally be divided into digital and analog modules:

Digital modules:

  • ·         Inputs: acquire simple switching signals, including those from keys or limit switches.
  • ·         Outputs: transmit control commands to actuators.

Analog modules:

  • ·         Inputs: acquire stepless values such as temperature, pressure, or level.
  • ·         Outputs: deliver continuous actuating variables.

In addition, special modules are available that are designed for specific tasks. These include controllers or communication modules.

How does signal conversion work in an I/O module?
Signals must be adjusted and converted so that controllers and processors can process the information. For analog inputs, this is done using an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), which converts stepless measured values into digital data. Conversely, a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) converts digital control commands into analog signals for actuators. In addition, the modules often perform functions such as interference suppression, level adjustment, or galvanic isolation to ensure reliable signal transmission.
What are the advantages of modular I/O systems?
Modular I/O systems are particularly flexible. They can be tailored precisely to your needs and expanded at any time. When performing maintenance, individual modules can be quickly replaced without needing to shut down the entire system. As a result, downtime and maintenance costs are reduced. This makes modular systems attractive for both small machines and complex plants. The JUMO I/O system has a modular design and can be expanded as required, so that users benefit from a high degree of flexibility and scalability.
How does a controller module improve the performance and safety of a PLC application?
In addition to the classic input and output of process signals, a controller as an I/O module independently handles the real-time processing and control of these signals directly at the hardware level.Unlike conventional I/O modules, which merely serve as an interface for signal transmission, the controller module integrates local PID control algorithms, thereby significantly reducing the load on the PLC's central CPU. This results in shorter cycle times, higher control quality, and increased process reliability – especially in the event of a malfunction, as the module can continue to control independently. This architecture is a unique feature of JUMO PLC modules that allows for decentralized, high-performance control.
Which communication protocols do I/O modules use?
Depending on the application and requirements, different protocols are used. Some of the fieldbus protocols include PROFIBUS, CANopen, DeviceNet, and Modbus RTU. Ethernet-based protocols such as EtherCAT, PROFINET, Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, and Powerlink offer higher data rates and greater flexibility. The JUMO I/O system uses EtherCAT as its internal communication protocol, which is referred to as the system bus in the technical documentation. In addition to its high speed and adaptability, EtherCAT offers comprehensive diagnostic functions that enable early detection of errors, which increases the reliability of the system.
What function does a gateway perform in I/O modules?
A gateway is an interface that enables networks or systems with different communication protocols to be connected to each other. In the context of I/O modules, a gateway is used when modules, controllers, or control systems need to communicate via different fieldbuses. It ensures that data is transmitted reliably so that sensor and actuator signals are correctly transmitted to the controller regardless of the bus used. As a result, even heterogeneous plant structures can be operated efficiently and monitored centrally. JUMO variTRON controllers can also act as gateways due to the large number of supported communication protocols.
How do you choose the right I/O modules?
The selection of suitable I/O modules depends on several factors. To begin with, it is essential to determine the number of required inputs and outputs, as well as whether the signals are digital or analog. Equally important is the signal type. The question here is whether voltage or current needs to be processed. In industrial environments, robust design types, high protection types against dust and moisture, and diagnostic capabilities are also important selection criteria.
