Applications
Ultrasonic flow meter - 10 main areas of application
Ultrasonic flowmeters are high-tech devices for measuring flow/flow rate. They are used in a wide range of industries, from water and wastewater technology to chemical dosing systems. Take a look at the 10 most common applications of our ultrasonic flow meters.

Versatile and flexible

An ultrasonic flow meter for liquids can be used flexibly. The JUMO flow meters of the flowTRANS US series can be used in water and environmental technology, but also in chemical dosing systems, for example. They are used by small and medium-sized water treatment plants, electroplating companies, and pump manufacturers, among others. They prove their worth in HVAC applications, in cooling water circuits, and in cooling towers.

Flow meter for seawater

The JUMO flowTRANS US W01and W02ultrasonic flowmeters can also be used in seawater. For example, in reverse osmosis seawater desalination, because they measure without contact and do not cause any additional pressure loss. This is essential for RO installations where pressure and flow must be accurate and balanced. Thanks to their high measuring accuracy and wide measuring range, ultrasonic flowmeters can reliably detect both high and low flow rates, making them ideal for monitoring membrane performance, detecting contamination or blockages, and optimising flushing cycles. The plastic housing makes the meter suitable for use in fresh, salt and brackish water.

Flow meter for wastewater

These high-quality measuring instruments are ideal for measuring liquid flows in wastewater applications and all kinds of contaminated media. They can measure liquids in all phases, including liquids with suspended solids, sludge by-products and other materials. In wastewater applications, they can also be used for dosing chemicals.

The lightweight ultrasonic flow meter has many advantages in wastewater applications — it does not wear out and does not need to be checked and calibrated regularly.

Flow meter for glycol

Glycol is an antifreeze agent and is used in combination with water in HVAC cooling and heating systems such as ammonia cooling machines and cooling towers. To optimise performance in such applications and create a mixture with the right balance, a flow measurement is performed. The ultrasonic flow meter from the flowTRANS US series is ideal for this purpose.

Flow meter in non-conductive media

Unlike electromagnetic flow meters, ultrasonic flow meters can measure the flow of non-conductive media, such as ultrapure water. They are ideal for measuring liquids with very low conductivity (less than 20 μS/cm), for example in osmosis systems.

Flow meter in polyelectrolyte preparation station

JUMO's ultrasonic flow meters from the flowTRANS US series can also replace standard water meters in polyelectrolyte preparation stations. They are comparable in price and offer additional advantages, such as no moving parts and a 4–20 mA measurement signal.

Flow meter for small quantities

Ultrasonic flowmeters prove their worth in processes with low flow rates, such as dosing applications, laboratories or fine control of chemical additives. Their high resolution and fast response time make these meters ideal for applications where precision and reproducibility are crucial. The contactless measuring method also prevents product contamination, which is essential in pharmaceutical or food processes, for example.

Flow meter for cooling towers

In cooling towers, stable circulation of cooling water is essential for efficient heat dissipation. Thanks to high measurement accuracy, deviations can be detected at an early stage and energy loss can be further reduced.

Flowmeter for galvanic systems

In electroplating systems and rinsing circuits, the liquids used are often corrosive. JUMO ultrasonic flowmeters can come into contact with the medium thanks to their plastic housing. They are low-maintenance and resistant to various aggressive media. Continuous measurement ensures a stable electrolytic process and uniform metal deposition, which directly contributes to product quality.

Flow meter for pump installations

Ultrasonic flow meters provide real-time insight into pump performance. They detect deviations such as dry running, blockages or imbalances in the flow. This allows pumps to be controlled efficiently, leading to energy savings and less wear and tear.

Flow meter for flushing water recovery

In order to gain control over consumption and reuse, it is necessary to accurately measure how much water is discharged and reused. Even at low flow rates, ultrasonic flow meters deliver the desired results. They help to optimise water consumption and enable compliance with environmental requirements or internal sustainability targets.

From application to theory — How does an ultrasonic flow meter work?

An ultrasonic flow meter is a device used to measure the flow of liquids using ultrasonic sound. The basic principle is that a transmitter emits ultrasonic waves that reach a receiver on the other side. This process takes place in both directions — with and against the flow.

The difference in signal transit time is proportional to the velocity of the fluid flow, resulting in the volume flow of the medium. If there is no flow, the signal takes the same amount of time in both directions.
